OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Scholarly achievement metrics are essential for academic researchers since they are used for promotion and funding opportunities. Our objective was to create awareness among pilot project PIs about how these scholarly activities are evaluated and about the need for continuous auto-evaluation. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: NIH-sponsored Clinical & Translational Research (CTR) infrastructure grants are a critical mechanism to increase scholarly activity. The Pilot Project Program Core (PPP) of The Alliance IDeA-CTR created a weighted metrics system to evaluate activities including presentations, publications, promotion, honors, & community service. We used the revised evidence-based medicine pyramid to develop the metric instrument. Pilot project PIs received the metric table and met quarterly with a PPP member to discuss progress. The top PIs were acknowledged during the Alliance Research Day with a platform presentation and a monetary award for research expenses or travel to scientific meetings. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: During our first 2 pilot project calls (2020-2022) the PPP funded 7 one-year pilot projects for ($50,000 each). We had a total of 10 PIs, 2 of the projects were MPI. Seven PIs were early or new stage investigators (ESI/NSI). Using the productivity award metric we had a total of 33 presentations, 10 publications, 12 events of community service, and 2 external grant funding. These are significant outcomes considering the pandemics impact on clinical & translational research. A total of 3 awards were given, one award per year for funding and an overall award. The activity was well received by the PIs who actively participated in the tracking of their scholarly activities using the metric. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Productivity metrics are crucial for the career development of ESI and NSI by raising awareness regarding the importance of scholarly activities in their career. This activity will help them track their productivity in an ongoing manner while becoming independent researchers.

Iridopsis panopla (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is a defoliator of eucalyptus (Myrtaceae). Iridopsis panopla pupae were collected on a commercial plantation of Eucalyptus grandis, in the locality of Ribas do Rio Pardo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. After 18 days, the hymenopteran parasitoids Brachymeria annulata (Chalcididae) and Trichospilus diatraeae (Eulophidae) emerged from the I. panopla pupae. This is the first host record of these parasitoids from this important eucalyptus pest. Biological aspects of T. diatraeae were evaluated under laboratory conditions.

Introduction
Health care for patients with chronic pathologies was scarce and limited worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic. The challenge for clinical and biomedical engineers is to develop a bridging system to maintain the basic health services for chronic pathologies. Populations living in low-income countries did not have access to basic health services during the pandemic and depended on the scarce resources of their emergency health system. There were also equity issues between urban and rural populations. In this context, telemedicine tools should be directed toward maintaining the basic health services for patients with chronic pathologies. This study evaluated the results of a telemedicine system in remote public hospitals in Paraguay to show how health care for patients with chronic pathologies has been maintained by providing access to tertiary level diagnostic services by specialists.
MethodsThis descriptive study evaluated the results of using telemedicine between 2014 and 2020 for diagnosis in remote public hospitals to bridge the gap in providing basic health services for patients with chronic pathologies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ResultsA total of 620,289 telediagnoses were performed in 67 hospitals. The 399,806 electrocardiogram diagnoses performed in 61 hospitals were normal (62%) or showed unspecified arrhythmias (13%) and sinus bradycardia (10%). The 207,597 teletomography tests performed in 12 hospitals were performed on the head because of motorcycle accidents and cerebrovascular diseases (54%), on the chest (14%), and other anatomical regions. The 12,867 electroencephalograms performed in 19 hospitals were for the antecedents of seizure (54%), evolutionary controls (14%), and headache (12%). The 19 ultrasound studies corresponded to prenatal controls.
ConclusionsAlthough the telemedicine tool implemented in public health to bridge the gap in basic health services for patients with chronic pathologies during the COVID-19 pandemic offered better equity in the provision of services in remote locations, a widespread use assessment should be undertaken before this tool is adopted.

Maternal protein restriction and physical activity can affect the interaction mother–placenta–fetus. This study quantified the gene expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurothrophin 4, tyrosine kinase receptor B (TrkB/NTRK2), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF-1r) in the different areas of mother’s brain (hypothalamus, hippocampus, and cortex), placenta, and fetus’ brain of rats. Female Wistar rats (n = 20) were housed in cages containing a running wheel for 4 weeks before gestation. According to the distance spontaneously traveled daily, rats were classified as inactive or active. During gestation, on continued access to the running wheel, active and inactive groups were randomized to receive normoprotein diet (18% protein) or a low-protein (LP) diet (8% protein). At day 20 of gestation, gene expression of neurotrophic factors was analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in different brain areas and the placenta. Dams submitted to a LP diet during gestation showed upregulation of IGF-1r and BDNF messenger RNA in the hypothalamus, IGF-1r and NTRK2 in the hippocampus, and BDNF, NTRK2, IGF-1 and IGF-1r in the cortex. In the placenta, there was a downregulation of IGF-1. In the brain of pups from mothers on LP diet, IGF-1r and NTRK2 were downregulated. Voluntary physical activity attenuated the effects of LP diet on IGF-1r in the hypothalamus, IGF-1r and NTRK2 in the hippocampus, IGF-1 in the placenta, and NTRK2 in the fetus’ brain. In conclusion, both maternal protein restriction and spontaneous physical activity influence the gene expression of BDNF, NTRK2, IGF-1, and IGF-1r, with spontaneous physical activity being able to normalize in part the defects caused by protein restriction during pregnancy.

This research communication addresses the hypothesis that the association of dietary vitamin E and Yerba Mate could help to prevent or decrease oxidation of milk enriched in unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). Four multiparous lactating Holstein cows were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square. Treatments were: (1) control diet with no Yerba Mate or vitamin E; (2) diet containing 375 IU/kg vitamin E; (3) diet containing 30 g/kg Yerba Mate; and (4) diet containing 375 IU/kg vitamin E and 30 g/kg Yerba Mate. To increase unsaturated fatty acids in milk, cows were fed 172 g/kg soybean seeds (on a dry matter basis). There was no interaction between vitamin E and Yerba Mate supplementation for milk antioxidant-related (polyphenols, reducing power, conjugated dienes, and TBARS) analyses. Milk reducing power was increased when cows were supplemented with Yerba Mate. Our results suggest that the association of dietary vitamin E and Yerba Mate does not help to prevent or decrease oxidation of milk in UFA.

Embolization of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries by coils introduced via catheterization is a well-established procedure for the control of excessively high pulmonary blood flow in patients with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary stenosis or atresia. Under special circumstances, this procedure can be life-saving. Between October 1987 and February 1992, four patients with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia and one patient with pulmonary stenosis rather than atresia underwent transcatheter embolization of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries as an emergency. Their ages ranged from 41 days to 13 years, with a mean of 45 months. Two patients had recently undergone surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot while one had been palliated by enlarging the right ventricular outflow tract without closing the ventricular septal defect. All three had been dependent on mechanical ventilation in the postoperative period with signs of pulmonary congestion or intraparenchymal hemorrhage. Eight embolizations were attempted with 0.025 or 0.038 inch coils; seven collateral arteries were completely occluded and one was partially occluded. Thirteen coils were used in total. The systemic saturation rose in one postsurgical patient, with radiological evidence of decreased pulmonary congestion and regression of hemorrhage. In the other cases, the systemic saturation was unchanged. Peak pulmonary arterial pressures dropped in two patients but remained unchanged in three. Our experience suggests that embolization of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries can be beneficial in critical patients, thus avoiding the risks of surgical reexploration.
